Using beat chart in game design process of your indie game

Today I’m going to talk about a tool I found in the book Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design by Scott Rogerse and which I find extremely useful for the game design process of your game, especially if it is a game with a large scope.

For those interested, the book can be purchased at:

Advantages

The Beat chart is a table where you describe in detail by filling the table the elements of each scene in your game.
The main advantages of using the Beat chart are:

1. Know previously the level of difficulty that each level will have

2. Avoid excessive key elements in a scene

3. More efficiently control the progress of the story of the game

4. Define the scope of the game correctly and more efficiently

5. Better adjust the risk/reward ratio (for each risk and job that the player takes, he has to earn something, right?)

6. Distribute the mechanics correctly in each scene

7. Avoid repetitive content in the game

8. Calculate Gameplay Time

9. Ease the creation of the game walkthrough

10. Discover the necessary skills that the player has to have before playing each level

11. List the mechanics that will be used
